Qigong morning flow

A short, gentle qigong flow to wake the body in the morning — slow, breath-paced forms with no exertion, no rep counting and no sweat. A calm voice names each form and previews the next, so you can move with your eyes soft and your breath easy. It opens and closes with gathering qi and moves through holding up the sky, cloud hands and a loosening sway. The gentlest way to start the day moving.

How the session works

  1. 1Stand with a little space around you, feet shoulder-width, knees soft.
  2. 2Press start. A calm voice names each form and previews the next.
  3. 3Move slowly and let the breath lead — float up on the inhale, sink on the exhale.
  4. 4It runs 5 to 15 minutes; there's nothing to push, just keep it flowing.

The moves

  • Commencing form40s

Float the arms up on the in-breath, sink them on the out.

  • Gathering qi40s

Scoop up on the inhale, press down slowly on the exhale.

  • Holding up the sky45s

Interlace the fingers, press the palms to the sky on the inhale, soften down on the exhale.

  • Cloud hands60s

Turn from the waist; let the hands drift across like passing clouds.

  • Loosening sway45s

Let the arms swing loosely as you turn side to side, spine relaxed.

  • Gathering qi40s

Scoop up on the inhale, press down slowly on the exhale.

What it's good for

  • Wakes the body gently with slow, breath-paced movement — no exertion.
  • Mobilises the shoulders, spine and hips first thing in the morning.
  • Calms and centres you as much as it loosens you up.

The evidence. Qigong and tai chi have good evidence for improving balance and wellbeing and modest evidence for lowering blood pressure; gentle morning practice is a low-risk way to move and settle.

Safety

  • Keep a wall, chair or rail within reach for balance, come out of any standing hold slowly, and sit down if you feel lightheaded.
  • Tai chi and qigong are gentle and generally safe, but this isn't medical advice — check with a clinician if you have a balance disorder, low blood pressure, a recent injury, or are pregnant.

Frequently asked questions

What is qigong?

Qigong is a gentle practice of slow, breath-paced movements and postures from Chinese tradition, used to relax the body and mind and improve mobility and balance. This flow guides a short beginner-friendly set.

Is qigong good in the morning?

Yes — a short morning qigong flow gently wakes the body, loosens the joints and settles the mind, without the exertion of a workout. It's an easy way to start the day moving.

Do I need any experience for qigong?

None — the forms are slow and the app names each one and previews the next, so beginners can follow along. There's no flexibility or fitness requirement.
