Running Pace Calculator
Calculate your running pace, finish time or distance — enter any two values and this pace calculator gives you the third, in min/km or min/mile, with your average speed.
How it works
Pace, time and distance are linked by one relationship: pace = time ÷ distance. Give the calculator any two of them and it solves for the third. It also reports speed (distance ÷ time, in km/h or mph) and your pace in the other unit, so you can read your effort whichever way suits you.
Internally everything is converted to seconds and a distance in your chosen unit. To switch between min/km and min/mile, the pace is scaled by 1.609344 kilometres per mile.
Worked example
You run 10 km in 50:00 (3,000 seconds). Pace = 3,000 ÷ 10 = 300 seconds per km = 5:00 /km. Your average speed is 10 ÷ (3,000 ÷ 3,600) = 12.0 km/h, and in imperial that pace is about 8:03 /mile (300 × 1.609 ≈ 483 seconds).
Finish times by pace
Estimated finish times for common race distances:
| Distance | 5:00 /km | 6:00 /km |
|---|---|---|
| 5K | 25:00 | 30:00 |
| 10K | 50:00 | 1:00:00 |
| Half (21.1K) | 1:45:29 | 2:06:35 |
| Marathon (42.195K) | 3:30:59 | 4:13:10 |
Half marathon = 21.0975 km, marathon = 42.195 km.
Reading your result
- Pace drops as you get faster — a lower min/km is quicker.
- Speed rises as you get faster — a higher km/h is quicker.
- Race-day pace is usually a touch slower than a short time-trial pace; build in a margin.
- To project a race from a recent result, see the Race Time Predictor.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate running pace?
- Divide your time by the distance you covered. For example, 50 minutes (3,000 seconds) over 10 km is 300 seconds per km, or a 5:00 min/km pace. The calculator does this automatically — just enter distance and time.
What is a good running pace?
- It depends on fitness and goals. Many recreational runners cruise at 6:00–7:00 min/km (about 9:40–11:15 min/mile), while a brisk 5:00 min/km (8:03 min/mile) is a common target for a faster 10K. The best pace is one you can sustain for your chosen distance.
How do I convert min/km to min/mile?
- Multiply your pace per kilometre by 1.609 to get pace per mile (a mile is longer, so the per-mile figure is bigger). A 5:00 min/km pace is about 8:03 min/mile. Switch the unit toggle to see both at once.
What pace do I need for a sub-2-hour half marathon?
- A half marathon is 21.0975 km, so finishing in under 2:00:00 (7,200 seconds) needs about 5:41 min/km, or roughly 9:09 min/mile. Set the calculator to solve for pace, enter 21.1 km and 2:00:00.
Pace vs speed — what's the difference?
- Pace is time per distance (min/km or min/mile) and gets smaller as you run faster. Speed is distance per time (km/h or mph) and gets bigger as you run faster. They describe the same effort from opposite directions; this tool shows both.
